tangled out
a performance about the data entanglement we find ourselves in these days. i was responsible for a big technical aspect of the event as well as being part of the performance myself.
the evening started off with the visitors being welcomed in and asked to register themselves on one of the four ipad's we placed at the entrance. after submitting a basic form they're asked to prove they are human seemingly using a google captcha. instead of picking traffic cones and stoplights we asked the visitors several personal questions hidden behind witty parody questions. after registering the visitors are asked to wait for the performance to begin.
i developed the google captcha replica and anet šilhavá populated it with questions.
during the performance ella pasveer and schuyler waters played two creatures escaping and taking control of technology. to visualize big tech surveying and controlling us i made a 1.20m x 2.40m light installation made out of a rebar mesh with led's spaced apart equally. this is supposed to resemble a server rack which you often find in databases, which are more crucial to big tech now than ever. by hanging it high up in the air it forces the performers to look up at it.
as the perfomance ended and visitors were invited to walk around a network started to pop-up on the big back walls of the main hall. each card in the network shows personal information gathered from the fake captcha as well as a picture secretly taken of the visitor during registration. this is a concept by me and anet šilhavá with the technical aspects done by me.
from beginning to end of this event we wanted the visitors to be intrigued and confused. the performance starts at the door. me and anet welcomed the visitors while playing a robotic character. after the performance people walked around and were surprised to see their own faces and names up on the walls. after about 5 minutes alarms sounded and the network of people started to disappear again as a text to speech voice told the visitors
